Kelly Cozzone was born in New Martinsville, WV. After spending 15 years in Myrtle Beach, SC, she finally made it back to her adopted hometown, Austin, TX. 

When Kelly isn't writing the mystery stories she loves, she is following her beloved Texas Longhorns. An avid football fan, she spends her fall months rooting on her favorite teams.

In addition to being an author, Kelly writes for Examiner.com and shares her thoughts and stories that strike a chord in her on her blog. She is a member of the National Association of Professional Women.
Kelly has been happily married to her husband for 21 years and has three children who are her life.

WYLABWYW: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Something we won’t find in you author bio on your website (do you work, hobbies, what do you like to do when not writing/working, etc.).  

I work for Goodwill’s retail division.  It gives me the opportunity to help those less fortunate and brings me great joy.  When I’m not writing, or working, I love spending time with my family.  I’m actually a home body. I’m happiest when I’m with my husband and children.

WYLABWYW:  Are you self-published, with an agency, or a combination of the two?

I am currently self-published but am excited to be able to say that in the near future I will be announcing the fact that I’ve signed with a publisher.

WYLABWYW: What inspired you to become a writer?

I’ve always had a vivid imagination and tons of stories to tell.  Now I’m able to fulfill my dream of being an author.

WYLABWYW: Do you have a mentor or mentors?

My main mentors are my amazing Crazy Lady Author sisters. We are a close group of strong women authors. We support one another unconditionally both personally and professionally.

WYLABWYW:  What do you do to prepare for a story?

Once I have a story idea, I research every aspect of it then outline the story.  Once that is done, I jump into the writing.

WYLABWYW: What do you find to be your biggest obstacle in the writing process?

For me the biggest obstacle is finding the time to be able to write.

WYLABWYW:  Where do you write?

I always write in one of two places, my office and curled up with my laptop in bed.

WYLABWYW: Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what do you typically listen to?

I have a playlist on iTunes that I turn on when I’m writing. It’s a total variety of genre’s from classical to rock and everything in between.

WYLABWYW: How much of your book(s), if any, is taken from real life events?

Not necessarily real life events but I love to people watch and gain the majority of my character looks and traits from people I see.

WYLABWYW:   Who is/was your biggest support for your writing career?

My biggest supporter is my husband. He knows how important my writing is to me and does everything possible to make my dreams come true.  Second to him would be my children and my sister, Kristen. They encourage me, travel with me, and give me the kick in the butt when I need it.

WYLABWYW:  What lead to write your chosen genre?

I love action books and movies, it was only natural for me to gravitate towards the suspense genre.  I hadn’t intended on including the romance at first but it was a natural evolution of my characters.

WYLABWYW:  Tell us about your book(s).

My Tropical Series, Tropical Dreams and Tropical Nightmares are romantic suspense journeys. David and Tiana fight for their lives and their love.  They do this all while their enemies are doing their best to not only hurt them but to end their lives.  They are full of action, adventure, betrayal, conspiracy, love, violence with just a hint of sex. 

A Moment in Time is a mother’s journey with her son. It takes Alexa and Eric down the path divorced parents and their children travel.  Throughout the book, Alexa is faced with some of the toughest obstacles mother’s can face and the sacrifice’s she makes in order to do the best for her son.  It’s a heartbreaking story of a mother’s love that also shows the strength and fortitude Alexa has.

WYLABWYW:  Do you have muses you used for your characters?

I do.  But I don’t want them to know they inspire me because then they won’t be authentic. LOL

WYLABWYW: Time to give your support a shout out! Tell us about your crew (cover designer, photographer, editor, videographer, proofreader, swag designer, etc.)

My cover designer is the amazing J.C. Clark. The things she can do with covers is incredible.  Laura Shaw and Carla Ives are wonderful editors.  The biggest shoutouts I can give though go to my PA’s, Trisha Leigh, Kaitlyn Cozzone and Kristen Jordan, they keep me on track and sane; My street team, The Jewel’s of Krusading Lunatics, they promote me, inspire me, keep me grounded but support me in absolutely every way; My two main author groups…The Crazy Lady Authors and the BadAss Book Bitches…these women are everything to me.  I know that they have my back and will support me no matter what but what is most important is they aren’t afraid to let me know when I’ve lost my mind. J

WYLABWYW: What are you working on now, and when can we expect your next release?

I have a release coming out in July and August (Both are a secret for now). My next series is Shadow Securities, Inc. which is a 6 book series that follows a security company and the cases they take.  The first book in the series, Blind Attraction will release later this year.

WYLABWYW: Can you share an excerpt from a work in progress?

Grabbing the file, Michael Dunbar flipped through it. “Brielle Doyle, she’s Lil’s author friend, right?” Stopping on her picture, he whistled as he leaned his chair back. “I won’t mind protecting that hot little number.”

Shooting his friend a dirty look, Colby snarled. “Don’t go there! She’s in trouble and needs our help. The last thing she needs is for you to be slobbering all over her.”

“You never know, she might like it.” He offered jumping to his feet and pumping his hips.

Whistling, Bryan O’Donnell laughed at the expression on Colby’s face. “Sit your ass down before you hurt yourself.”

“Knock it off you two,” Colby ordered trying not to laugh. “Do you think you can ignore your dicks long enough to get through this briefing?”

Looking at his crotch, Michael said, “Dude, he wants me to work! Leave me alone.” Saluting Colby, “We’re good to go,” he announced.

Shaking his head, Colby walked to the dry erase board in the front of the room. Placing Brielle’s picture on the board, he turned towards the men. “Brielle Doyle, single, lives alone. She is an author and has a stalker. We don’t know much about the man other than he approached her face to face for the first time hours before someone tried to break into her home. Handing a file to Michael, he continued, “here are the email communications he’s sent to Brielle. See if you can backtrack the IP address and find out who he is. Also check surveillence cameras in the area around The Artroom and Lily’s store. See if you can spot anyone following Brielle last night.”

“Will do,” Michael replied. “I’ll get on it right now.”

“I’ll be meeting with Brielle and Daniel this morning. Her stalker left a box full of photos he’s taken over the last few weeks. APD is testing the pictures to see if there is any DNA or fingerprint evidence on them. Brielle is determined to stay in her home, I’ll be staying with her round the clock. Until this asshole is caught, she needs to be protected.”

“Man, how did you manage to be the one who gets to play house with her?” Michael asked. “She’d have so much more fun with me!”

“She doesn’t want to be stuck looking at your ugly mug day in and day out.” Colby challenged.

“Harsh man, that’s just wrong.” Michael pretended to pout.

Shaking his head, Colby continued, “Gavin will coordinate everything from here. O’Donnell and LaCroix, you two set up surveillence around Brielle’s house. There’s a vacant house across the street, it will be the base of our operations. I’ve got permission to use it from the realtor. I’ll pick up this keys this morning then, you two can monitor her house and the video monitors from there. Alix, you’ll provide back up for me from the base house. Any questions?”

Jules Dixon lives in Omaha, NE with her beer-concocting hubby, two almost grown children, one dog and two cats. She enjoys entertaining her neighbors, by singing and dancing while mowing her lawn and is an online distraction to her writing friends. She quite possibly eats her own body weight of Gummy Bears, Hot Tamales, and Red Vines, every year. She’s addicted to everything related to the amazing emotion of love, and has been referred to as "terribly optimistic" which she took as a compliment, but may not have been and she’s okay with that.

She explores the rich psychology of sexuality, choices, and conflicts of high school, college, and new adult characters in her novels and novellas. Her Triple R Series is New Adult romance and has four novels published as of March 2015, with at least four more to be published in the series in the year. She has a college romance trilogy in the works, a young adult suspense-romance series almost completed, and an erotic New Adult serial of ten parts started. She’s a busy writer, but she loves it.

WYLABWYW: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Something we won’t find in you author bio on your website (do you work, hobbies, what do you like to do when not writing/working, etc.).

When I’m not writing, I like (honestly, I’m obsessed with) watching the TV show Supernatural. I’m in love with Jensen Ackles (but don’t tell my hubby ;-)!) Otherwise, I manage rental property for money to pay the bills.

WYLABWYW:  Are you self-published, with an agency, or a combination of the two?

I am self-published, but I would like to be a hybrid author with the combination of the two.

WYLABWYW: What inspired you to become a writer?

Two people. First, my son watched me read all kinds of books for years. One day he just simply asked, “Mom, why don’t you write a book?” I stopped and thought about it and decided it was a good question. I loved to write, had some ideas floating around, and so I sat at the computer and for 27 hours straight I wrote. My hubby likes to refer to it as “The beginning of the mania.” Then I showered and sat down for another 19 hours straight. It became an obsession and I’ve been consistently writing eight to nine hours a day about five days a week ever since.

Second, I read the Marked Men Series by Jay Crownover and I was hooked on New Adult Contemporary Romance. Her characters, especially the males, had grit and emotion and problems that had teeth. The women were strong and spunky and from the beginning of the book I wanted them to be happy and find someone as great as they are. Her writing inspired me to start a second series and find my voice. She still is an inspiration and I love her writing!

WYLABWYW: Do you have a mentor or mentors?

I have a writing partner, C Jai Ferry and I have a critique partner, author Kelly Eadon. Both have been an integral part of who I am as an author. My writing partner is the closest to a mentor. She has so much knowledge and isn’t afraid to share it. She also brings me back down to Earth when I start freaking out about something that isn’t that important. I think we all need one of those in our lives. At the beginning of 2015, I vowed to pay it forward to other authors, so I’m mentoring three newbies this year. One of them will be publishing soon and I’m so proud of her. I love helping other authors and find that the writing community is very willing to assist each other.

WYLABWYW:  What do you do to prepare for a story?

Before I start writing, I make a soundtrack of songs. I use Spotify and think of what kind of emotional rollercoaster I want to portray. Will the characters listen to country, rock, alternative, oldies, 80s? Will they be sappy love songs or upbeat tempos? Then I write an outline and after I’m secure in what I want to say, I write the story. I put the songs in an order that corresponds to the novel and I add more songs.

WYLABWYW: What do you find to be your biggest obstacle in the writing process?

Altering from my outline so much that the story doesn’t have direction would be something I struggle with. I usually end up scrapping a portion of each novel and rewriting. I’ve come to terms that this is part of my process and it isn’t wrong, it’s just mine.

WYLABWYW:  Where do you write?

I have a desk that I write at 80% of the time. The other 20% is spend in a recliner in front of the TV screen while Supernatural plays in the background and I write.

WYLABWYW: Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what do you typically listen to?

That 80% of the time that I’m at my desk, yes, I’m listening to music. I’m an 80’s girl, so if I’m not enjoying the corresponding soundtrack for the novel, I will pick out an 80’s station on I <3 Radio or Spotify and listen to that. I also love the Foo Fighters, Taylor Swift (she is great when writing angsty romance) and anything Justin Timberlake.

WYLABWYW: How much of your book(s), if any, is taken from real life events?

A few parts, but not as many as I thought I would use. More dialogue is used or quips of conversations. Like the other day my friend said “He almost went fetal,” and I thought, I’m using that line in a book. I type them into my phone. My friends probably think I’m recording them! J I also have “Everything’s better with two vaginas in the room” in my phone and I don’t remember what it came from but it will appear in a book. My first series was started after a girls’ night out with a friend and we saw this really cute bartender and he just inspired me. The character description looks little like him because he had a ponytail, but other things aren’t the same. The night appears in the book just like it happened, we nicknamed him “Ponytail” and have called him that ever since.

WYLABWYW:   Who is/was your biggest support for your writing career?

Wow, naming just one person is so hard, but I would say my husband. He’s been great at supporting, but not smothering. He asks questions, and listens to me.

WYLABWYW:  What lead to write your chosen genre?

I write New Adult. I read Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series and thought that is what I want to write. Love her work so much; it almost hurts to know that the series is over. I’m avoiding reading Asa until I have a weekend where I can read from Rule to Jet to Rome to Nash to Rowdy to Asa…that will probably be a full weekend of reading, but I’m committed. I also love that New Adult embraces LGBQT warmly. I’ve written one male/male romance and it was well received and readers loved the diversity.

WYLABWYW:  Tell us about your book(s).

My books are all happy ending books that have characters with both deep crevassing internal and external flaws. I tried to dig down into each character to find something that will make them unique and touch a different place in a reader’s heart. I tackle some pretty hefty issues like adult bullying, cancer, PTSD, drug usage, unplanned pregnancy, and sexual orientation.

My Triple R Series currently has four novels and one novella released. I like to say that the series has the camaraderie and humor of the TV show Friends but with a whole lot more sex.

WYLABWYW:  Do you have muses you used for your characters?

Sure! The first novel, Run to Love, male character, Jude Saylor came from a bartender after that fateful girls’ night out. The second novel, Rest, My Love, the lead male spoke to me after I saw a picture of a soldier on the internet and he had these puppy dog brown eyes, but this look of pain in them. The third novel, Ride With Love, well I drive by a Ducati dealership and there are always these hot bikes lined up outside. I just started imagining what someone who owns multiple motorcycles might be like and the lead male Kanyon was born. The fourth novel, Road to Love, I have always been surrounded by loves of all variety and combination of people, so it is an amalgamation of those relationships that have touched my heart most.  The novella, Ribbons of Love, I think subconsciously I used my friend’s son as the muse. Her son was just out of the Army and finding his way as a new adult. He’s very impressive and the lead male, Bryson, is too.

My cover designer is Gabriel Renfrow of Frac Media. My editor is the wonderful and talented, Michelle Josette or MJbookeditor.com. That is my current team, but I just added a personal assistant today, Angela and I hope that it works out because I need some help to do everything and still be able to write!

WYLABWYW: What are you working on now, and when can we expect your next release?

I have four projects going: a Young Adult suspense series; a New Adult erotica serial of ten parts; a male/male cowboy and college graduate romance series; and a college sports romance three-part novel series. Plus, I plan to finish up the Triple R Series this year with three more novels and two more novellas. The erotica serial will be released at the beginning of 2016, the college romance and male/male is being pitched to agents for traditional publishing, but if I nothing happens by the fall of 2015, I will publish those myself, too.

WYLABWYW: Can you share an excerpt from a work in progress?

“Gray, you look like someone stole your puppy, ate your last Twinkie, and took a crap on your prized laptop. It’s like sad, angry, grossed-out—all in one messed-up face.”

My normally unobservant brother wasn’t wrong. The last two weeks of my life had been about the level of hell that he described. If he’d added, “diced your heart into a hundred pieces,” he’d have verbally amassed my emotional state, but his interest in my mood was fleeting. Holston returned to fidgeting with the sound system, plugging his phone into the USB and bouncing around music genres more than Taylor Swift.

The seven-hour mind-numbing drive to my hometown of Valentine, Nebraska from Denver, Colorado was doing nothing to help me forget what had happened. As the green ditches of countryside flew by, I relived the past two weeks of fresh hell, which now included Taylor Swift’s newest album singing about her fucked-up relationships. I could relate to her situation and that fact only deteriorated my mood. To be in the same place as T-Swift…now that was rock bottom, maybe hiding-under-and-being-crushed-by-a-rock bottom.

“Holston! Just stop, please,” I huffed as he forwarded through a song for the tenth time in succession. I propped my head up on my fist as I balanced my elbow against the cool glass of the driver’s side window.

“Dude, you’ve been a dick the entire drive and it’s not my choice of music that’s the fucking problem. What is up with you?”

“Nothing.”

“Again, that’s not a nothing face!”

Maybe Holston was better at reading people than I thought. Of course, being around me for twenty-one years probably had a little to do with it. I blindly inspected the ankle-high, quarter-mile lines of corn that waved leafy fingers. The movement seemed friendly and welcoming and reminded me of running through the rows as teenagers, the sharp leaves slicing tiny marks into our skin but our happiness outshining any pain. Sometimes being an adult was pain without happiness.

“Just a lot on my mind,” I mumbled.

Holston turned off the radio. “Bro, whatever it is, just spit it out. I can’t take you sighing and huffing and shaking your head for the next three hours.”

Telling my family that Trex Jones would no longer be a part of our lives would be more difficult and gut-wrenching than when I informed them I was gay. My two brothers, three sisters, and both of my parents loved Trex, probably as much as I did. And because he was an only child and they substituted as family for him, Trex loved them, too. And me. At least that was what I thought, until, on the last day of classes, I caught him balls-deep in the summer library intern on our kitchen table.

WYLABWYW:  Do you have any upcoming signing events or appearances scheduled later this year or in 2016?

I will be at the RomCon convention in Denver Colorado September 26 with the signing 3:30-5:30pm.  And then I plan to be back at the Romance Rendezvous in Cedar Falls Iowa in 2016 and adding more dates next year.

WYLABWYW: Which new authors have caught your attention?

BL Berry- she writes these angsty, twisty, gritty New Adult stories. Harper Miller has this sense of humor that makes me smile. She is also willing to take chances and make people think outside of themselves. Jacqueline Winters asked me to critique for her and I was so thrilled. Her debut release has heart and suspense and her lead male is beyond yummy.  And lastly Corrissa James is a new favorite of mine. I love cowboy romances and her Great Plains Series is contemporary cowboy romance- even better!

I play with words and numbers in my head.  Constantly.  Often, when I'm sleeping! 

I'm a lightweight when it comes to alcohol.  My kids laugh at me because of it.

WYLABWYW: What inspired you to become a writer?

I think I was born with the desire to write.  Silly things like life and paying the bills got in the way.

Now that I'm an author, it's a LOT harder than it looked from a distance...lol

WYLABWYW: Do you have a mentor or mentors?

I did have a mentor when I began to write novels.  I learned so much from him, I could never express my gratitude.  It was a long-distance mentor-ship.  He lives (lived) in Chicago, and I in Canada.

I believe he's in prison now.  That doesn't mean he wasn't hugely instrumental.  He was.

WYLABWYW:  What do you do to prepare for a story?

Not sleep?  Stories, um, CUM to me in the night.  For instance, while I was writing Mastered, I was pretty sure the characters would NOT have names.  One night—BOTH names came to me in the black of night.

And, so, James Colton and Missy Weaver were born.

WYLABWYW: What do you find to be your biggest obstacle in the writing process?

Discipline.  I need discipline. (lol)

WYLABWYW:  Where do you write?

In the dungeon in my head.  But, also on a computer. I'm adaptable like that.

WYLABWYW: Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what do you typically listen to?

Silence. Absolute. Even a fan in the next room puts me off.  Hey, I'm easily distracted, what can I tell you!

WYLABWYW: How much of your book(s), if any, is taken from real life events?

Considering the genre I write, I'll take the 5th on that question, thanks.

Friends.  My kids aren't thrilled about the genre their mama chose.  Imagine that.

WYLABWYW:  Tell us about your book(s).

The MASTERED Saga (2 novels) is first and foremost a love story.  It is told from two POV's:  That of the submissive protagonist, Missy Weaver, and the Dominant antagonist, James Colton.

It is real.  Gritty.  True to life.  And, unique in its genre.

It refuses to stop at 50 shades.  Instead, it offers a full spectrum—from the physical and emotional to the psychological motivations behind a Dom/sub relationship.

The reader comes away not only panting for more (hopefully), but with actual insight into a quote, unquote - 'forbidden' lifestyle. (BDSM)

The way I see it, insight is the key to replacing fear with understanding.  As, it is with all things.

Oh, did I mention?  There's also a TON of hot, deviant S-E-X! Lol

I've just released Trussed.  I'm not one of those prolific authors who can pump out three or four books a year.  I need a recovery period.  A re-juicing period.

Sure!  Excerpt from TRUSSED (Book 2: The MASTERED Saga):

“He was less than three feet away from Missy’s naked and writhing body.  She couldn’t catch a cold and him not see it coming.  She was most fetching bound to his bed, he noted.  The binds were symbolic, and he intended to make his point crystal clear.  The last time they'd spent the night together, he'd woken to find her AWOL, the collar he'd bestowed upon her unlocked and abandoned.

She had much to atone for and much to learn.  Judging from her swamp of a pussy, she was going to enjoy the arduous process as much as he was. 

Quite frankly, he could sit here and look at her until the end of time.  Missy was to his heart what oxygen was to his lungs.  After losing his wife to a freak asthma attack three years ago, he'd fully expected to spend the rest of his life alone, mired in guilt and remorse.

Harper Miller is a thirty-something native New Yorker. She's traveled the world and lived in a variety of places but always finds her way back to the Big Apple.

I watch a lot of Netflix. Just got halfway through Daredevil. Man, that show is awesome!

WYLABWYW:  Are you self-published, with an agency, or a combination of the two?

Totally self-published!

WYLABWYW: What inspired you to become a writer?

Boredom, sucky dating life, reading stories with Alpha men who were complete douchebags instead of loving and kind. A guy can be an Alpha male but still be a decent human being. I was inspired to write a Dom, who pursued the woman he wanted without being a creep.

WYLABWYW: Do you have a mentor or mentors?

Nah.

WYLABWYW:  What do you do to prepare for a story?

Nothing really. Just plop myself down on my couch and start typing.

WYLABWYW: What do you find to be your biggest obstacle in the writing process?

Motivation some days, not enough time to get writing in on other days.

WYLABWYW:  Where do you write?

My kitchen or my living room on my couch. Occasionally, the library.

WYLABWYW: Do you listen to music when you write?

If so, what do you typically listen to? Sometimes, depends on what kind of emotion I’m trying to evoke. I can go from Nina Simone to Jay-Z to Nine Inch Nails. Never a dull moment, but I listen to all kind of music. I usually create a Spotify playlist for the story I’m writing.

WYLABWYW: How much of your book(s), if any, is taken from real life events?

Haha. Trick question. ;-)

WYLABWYW:   Who is/was your biggest support for your writing career?

Aside from my family, my team. My cover artist, my designer, my editors, my beta readers, and my blogger/author friends. They never hesitate to send words of encouragement my way. LOL, they’re also brutally honest, which I appreciate.

WYLABWYW:  What lead to writing your chosen genre?

I like kink. I also think it’s possible to intertwine romance and kink. You don’t see it too often in the romance genre. In erotica, it’s usually sex without any real connection between the characters.

WYLABWYW:  Tell us about your book(s).

Well, as I stated earlier, I wanted to write about a Dom, who was loving and kind but semi-aggressive in his pursuit of a woman he believed to be his soulmate. The Sweetest Taboo was born. After that, I began working on another story but I thought, “Gee, wouldn’t it be a great idea to write stories about kinky people on a website and their experiences?” From that idea, Ironic was born followed by Renewed. A kinky series.

Sadly, as I type this, it’s still with my editing team so unfortunately, I can’t share anything. I cannot share unedited work, LOL I feel so NAKED.

Yes, ma’am! I’ll hopefully be meeting you and many other cool authors at Indies in NY 2016.

WYLABWYW: Which new authors have caught your attention?

New to me authors this year that I’ve been digging: Vi Keeland, Joseph Lance Tonlet, Jason Dunatos, Amy Harmon, Damon Suede, Avril Ashton. I’m sure this list would be longer if I wrote less LOL. Before partaking on this author journey, I read at least 10-12 books a month.
